Bharat Sabha, one of the country’s oldest socio-political organisations, marked its 150th anniversary on Friday with a day-long celebration in Kolkata, featuring a colourful procession, academic discussions, and cultural presentations. The day began with a vibrant parade from the iconic College Street Coffee House to the historic India Sabha Hall. Students from various schools and colleges participated, commemorating the legacy of the Sabha’s founding members. A series of talks followed, focusing on the institution’s historical significance. Participants were felicitated with certificates of appreciation and mementoes. The main event in the evening featured noted speakers including former Rajya Sabha MPs Prof. Pradip Bhattacharya and Jawhar Sircar, as well as distinguished educationist Prof. Meeratun Nahar. The session was chaired by Anil Kumar Ray. The theme of the discussion was “India Sabha’s Role and Responsibility Amidst the Nation’s Current Socio-Economic and Political Landscape.”
Speaking on the occasion, India Sabha’s General Secretary Manik Chandra Dolui said that various events throughout the day honoured the Sabha’s long-standing contributions to social reform. He added that year-round programmes have been planned as part of the anniversary observances.
The event concluded with the screening of a government-produced documentary film on freedom fighter Matangini Hazra, directed by Shila Dutta.
